The returning runner…

Act 35 – Some running etiquette around female runners

Based on a brazilian posts I have seen, female runners particularly enjoy kicking male buttocks but, at the same time can be very nervous around male runners while working out and are sometimes downright terrified (potentially with good reason). Some thoughts for male runners to help make everyone more comfortable:

·       When catching up to a female runner on the trail (if that ever happens), gently announce yourself with a “hey, how’s it goin” or similar while still a little ways back.

·       I like to “use” other runners to help with my pace and form. Before falling in step with a female runner ask permission. Let them know that you are hoping to press a little harder by keeping up or that running with another helps with your form. If there is any discomfort, back off!

·       Be aware of the surroundings and if there are any others in the area that might be viewed as a threat. Could your presence be a reassurance (hopefully a possibility) or a magnification of what is already perceived as an uncomfortable situation? If someone else appears more threatening, put yourself in between them and the female runner.

·       If you see something that doesn’t look right, do something!

o   Call 911.

o   Yell, attract attention.

o   Intervene directly to the extent you are comfortable doing so.

These are just some thoughts that come to mind for me. I welcome feedback!
